Our Idea

We want to establish an HIV/AIDS community resource centre in Mazabuka, Zambia. The resource centre would be a place for sharing ideas and learning new skills and knowledge. The resource centre would meet the following objectives:

  • To give SAPEP’s AIDS Action Clubs an appropriate space from which to scale-up their interventions
  • To facilitate information sharing and collaboration between relevant community groups
  • To enable greater coordination of activities between groups involved in HIV/AIDS interventions

Resource Centre Sketch

Among the facilities we would like to make available are:

Training Facilities

SAPEP and other individuals and community groups working to prevent and mitigate HIV/AIDS would be able to use these facilities for training in key area such as:

  • HIV prevention
  • Peer Education approaches
  • ART Adherence
  • Voluntary Counselling and Testing
  • Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV

Reference Library

A reference library would include books, manuals, brochures, posters and videos. Community members would be able to empower themselves with knowledge. Staff would help those with lower literacy levels to access resources and the knowledge that can be gained from reading them.

Multimedia facilities

In order to engage those with lower literacy levels, video-viewing and internet facilities would be available.

Meeting rooms

Meeting space would be provided for groups who are interested in coming together and discussing HIV/AIDS and how best to mitigate the epidemic in Zambia.

Counselling

The resource centre would be open to all those who want to talk about any aspect of sexuality, HIV/AIDS and sexual health issues. A counselling room would be manned by trained youth counsellors available to discuss issues with young people and refer them to relevant service providers where appropriate.

Volunteer Accommodation

Within the resource centre, we would provide accommodation for volunteers who come to work with us from overseas. This would allow them to be right at the heart of our work and learn about our effective response to HIV/AIDS.
